The Factory!

"Akward and repetative"

submission: The Factory!
date: May 24, 2009

The graphics were simple, but they fit. It was clever to notice that while the base 4 had unique colors, the other numbers were all mixes of those four bases.

However, someone pointed out that it is "awkward" for laptops. I don't think it's just laptops, but the mouse would probably have helped. The buttons and the way I had to move with the mouse and that (obviously) the game became unresponsive once I moved my mouse off screen accidentally was essentially bothersome.

Another point is that the game was repetative without any change except for difficulty, which was barely noticeable until about level 6 or 7 when the multiples began coming. Maybe mix it up with some colors and different music?

Maybe even a level tiering, like making different worlds, levels, and achievements, similar to something like Star Fox's idea of having about 2-3 levels per world and then make a few worlds.

I mean, you load from offsite, and the game is under a meg, I'm sure it's feasible.

May 25, 2009

Author's Response:

Thanks for the advice!

I wanted to make the game as simple and small as possible, so that's why I didn't add more music or thing like that. But I'll have this in mind, as well as the controls and difficulty issues, for a sequel (although, not very likely I'll do one) or when making another game (which I hope will be soon).

Oh, by the way, the game doesn't load offsite.

date: May 10, 2009

You should have been able to find sprites of the player in the grass versus just running overtop of it.

Also, Metapod doesn't forget tackle, so that's a bit flawed.

May 10, 2009

Author's Response:

Metapod forgetting tackle is the entire point of the joke. I mean, I don't think Epic Fail Guy is in Pokemon either, it's not a flaw, it's the point of the flash

"I really could care less about the movie"

date: May 9, 2009

And obviously, you too.

But I wholy agree with what you stated. I think what's more sad than the actual situation at hand is the reactions that I've seen in these comments. For example:

"And no, creating your own script and characters isn't that important, being funny and appealing to the public is." - G12IM88

His entire review basically made me die inside a little.

Anyways, thanks for doing this. I've seen a lot of journals about this, but obviously some little kid posting about how Madness makes his dick hard or that he thinks that rtil is a jerk is more important.

I think Tom made a really good move front paging this, just so people will read this. Even if people aren't going to read it and are just going to criticize the movie, which was truly just a formaility with a lemony zest of satire.

Thanks.

Author's Response:

A few months ago ashford pride made a movie with a foreboding title. It was called "Awesome Grounds".

Well ladies and gentlemen, that's might as well what this site should be called (at least right now), with the top row on the front page slot dedicated to an "awesome" movie and an "awesome" parody, an "awesome" t-shirt in the newgrounds store, and pretty much every "awesome" movie in the top 100, along with han's "awesome's creed".

I can't go to newgrounds with seeing something not about egoraptor or his coveted video game parody series. It makes me wonder sometimes if pursuing anything but half-assed cartoons making mildly funny observations about video games laced with profanity is even worth it. Truly, they are what bring the masses of 13-year olds to this site, and thus increases traffic and competition in the internet world. But you have to ask yourself, with this sort of two-bit audience increasing in numbers, are they really interested in watching anything else?

I understand that it's a dog eat dog world in the online entertainment business, and to compete you have to pretty much put up content that a majority of internet browsers would click on. This includes either women or video games. Things they already know they want. And that's all they want. They sign up, watch more, and come back and do it again later. They're trained to know that what they want is easily accessible and is promoted all over the site.

Original content is often shuffled off to the bottom of the page, or never gets any attention to begin with. Now comes into play the whole 'they won't click on it unless there's a boob for the icon', etc etc. That's because they've been fashioned to think that way.

I'm not saying i have all the mysterious answers to the way people's minds work. But this much is true - if all people click on are breasts and video game icons, and you give them breasts and video game icons, you're not pushing the envelope.

Newgrounds is the epitome of user-generated content. We already have a massive advantage over youtube in the fact that making a cartoon involves so much more creativity than snappily editing your webcam footage. So instead of 200 cartoons coming out every minute, we have 200 cartoons coming out every day. That gives someone a better chance of breaking out and being discovered for his hard work, and a reward for a job well done.

But in the same way that viewers are trained that they don't have to go out of their way to avoid original content they would otherwise enjoy, authors are becoming more and more disenchanted with their personal creations and are turning to nerd culture icons and cheap tactics to get viewers.

I can't tell you how many animators I have spoken to that have shunned their own creations in favor of sub-pop culture parody and disjointed scripts sprinkled with toilet humor and profanity. a cartoon catering to everyone who's forgotten what cartoons are all about. And here we are shoving away everything about cartoons that was originally appealing and magical, because we're pretty much forced to.

I'm not pointing the finger at any one person here. I think it's part of the bigger picture - bigger than Newgrounds, too. But if people really care about the future of cartoons and animation, we wouldn't be seeing this kind of blatant favoritism.

People will find what they want if they want it. They don't need to be spoon fed it all.

For thirty years animators who strive to create something genuinely unique have gotten nothing but a slap in the face. It's sickening and it has to stop someday, before they all disappear.

Lastly, this post is not about me. I'm not writing this out of self-pity, bitterness or spite. I'm being honest. I care a lot about the future of animation, and what I see around me is very troubling. The industry is bad enough, but where the future lies is in the small corners of the animation world. Newgrounds is one of them. I spend a lot of time trying to encourage and teach frame-by-frame animation, and creating your own characters and scripts. That is what is important

My only thought was that at one point the sound went off sync and then just kept getting worse. Did you strem the sound or use the event setting?

Other than that, I thought it was nice. A little dark, but they were mostly silhouettes.

All I can say is you better pass the class :3

March 16, 2009

Author's Response:

haha, i think have a pretty good chance of passing the class, even with a few missing assignments XD.
i did not use event settings, because im on the level1 class right now, and audio along with action scripting was not a big part of it.

thank you for the feedback! appreciate it a lot.

The moving eith a mouse is frustrating, especially on a laptop.

I found that I would die when I hit level 8-10 because I'd try to upgrade my skill level and it wouldn't give me any time to, even if I had added some feeling to her gauge.

My advice would be try and work out a system for using the keys to fuck her while using the mouse to select positions and powerups and whatnot.

Just to make it a bit more fluid and a bit less pain in the ass :D

My only other complaint is that it gets a bit repetative, and I only got halfway through :\

January 9, 2009

Author's Response:

I had set it up the other way around where the keys to select positions and the mouse for the slider. If you use the mouse for both you will loose lol. I did that on purpose.

I submitted an update of this it should show up soon. I consider it to now be a bit less pain in the ass :D but still 'kind of' challenging.

I can see how it gets repetitive but I consider it a mini game. Not going to do too much more here but I am working on other stuff.

Thanks for the review.

submission: $00pah NiN10Doh!

Only okay. A lot of the jokes weren't very funny, and as questionably hot as the Pokemon Girls were, the Jokes are getting old and repetitive.

Some parts were well, done, like the pokemon girls (I can't deny that the art wasn't anatomically correct or animated well) and the StarFox parts (fluid and clean), but in general, for such a large collab (I shit myself a little when I realized it was over 20 MEGS :O), most of it was really bad. Especially LegendaryFrog's part.

For someone that has such a name for himself, a simple character over a white background... awesome. >:c That was sarcasm, btw.

Overall, I guess that the good parts were enough to carry the bad, but that doesn't really stop the score from being a little(very) inflated.

In the end, I'd probably give you guys something a little less than a 4, like a 3.97 or something. It's a good collab, but it's not this amazing collab like everyone's making it out to be.

Just don't tell me there's another one and we'll be fine.

January 3, 2009

Author's Response:

Marth over the blank screen was done purposely, not out of laziness. It was just meant as a quick one simply because it's true, typical viewers around here who like this type of material know jack shit about that franchise.

No, there's not gonna be another one. Thanks for the review!
